Chemical Engineering - Course Description & Scope

Chemistry lovers should surely opt for this course, as also for those who plan to do masters in petroleum related subjects. Chemical engineering largely involves the design, improvement and maintenance of processes involving chemical or biological transformations for large-scale manufacture.


Chemical engineering, mind you, has very little to do with chemistry. You’re not going to be learning any details about chemical reactions and organic chemistry, like you did in 12th. You’ll be learning a lot about equipment designs, plant operations and engineering aspects involved in the manufacture and processing of industrial chemicals.

Over the years you shall be dealing with a good deal of mathematics and simple principles of conservation of mass and energy. The final year project will be a summary of whatever you’ve learned over the 2nd and 3rd year.

Chemical based companies like aromatics, petrochemical, washing powder etc. However, most chemical engineers go abroad to do their Masters, after which they are often hired by pharmaceutical companies, or packaged-foods companies. Students doing their Masters in fields like perfumes can hope to get placed in some of the household perfume giants.
