MBA Admissions via CMAT BEGINS
June 03, 2013

Admissions to Masters of Management Studies (MMS) in Maharashtra via the Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) for the academic year 2013-15 have begun. Candidates who appeared for the CMAT exam can REGISTER for the Centralised Admission Process (CAP) on or before June 12.

CMAT, which is conducted for the first time after the MAH CET was scrapped last year, was held thrice in the entire year (Sept'12, Feb'13 and May'13). Moreover, due to the terrible time crunch amd multiple tests for CMAT, AICTE has decided that this year admissions will be based ONLY ON CMAT scores; which means, the integral part of MBA admissions - Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI) have been scrapped.

Online Submission of CAP form will start from June 3 and commence till June 12.

GD/PI Scrapped for MBA Admissions 2013 in Maharashtra via CMAT
May 30, 2013

The recent commotion regarding scrapping of Group Discussuion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI) was cleared after Dayanand Meshram, Joint Director of Directorate Technical Education (DTE) Maharashtra confirmed.

He stated, "the thinking was that we have to finish the first round of admissions by June 30. Since GD and PI would have taken more time, we have decided to use only CMAT scores for admissions to MBA Colleges."

This move from DTE has come as a shock to most of the students because GD and PI have been an essential part of MBA admissions process throughout the past years.

Hrishi Telang an MBA aspirant was baffled by this news as GD and PI were his only sought after options to make up for his average score in CMAT and increase his rank. "Why does the AICTE have to pass its inefficiencies to DTE and disturb the conventional process?", an irate Hrishi said.

Another MBA aspirant who wished not be named said, "How can the students be admitted to a professional masters course like MBA without even testing their communication skills? This will only deteriorate the quality of students."

While some students who had done well in the Subjective CMAT test and have got good ranks have embraced this change as they would be able to take admissions on basis of their CMAT scores only.

DTE believes that this will help bring objectivity in the process. "Earlier, the process was subjective and one could allot any marks in the GD and PI. The process now will be objective based on only CMAT scores. "B-schools all over India have been stressing upon good communication skills among future managers. In that sense, isn't this a regressive step? "You have to consider the fact that a lot of students from rural Maharashtra take the exam. For most of them, English is a problem anyway. Students who are good in English will be the ones doing very well in CMAT. So, this question does not arise", replied Mr. Meshram (Source : Pagalguy)

In a gist, this decision has evoked a mixed response from the students but they hope that this change is just a situational measure and is not implemented next year onwards.

Results for Third (Additional) CMAT held in May will be decalred on June 1.

No GD/PI likely for MBA Admissions through CMAT
May 27, 2013

MBA aspirants seeking admissions to B-schools in Maharashtra WILL NOT have to sit through Group Discussions (GD) and Personal Interview (PI) this year via CMAT.

The Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), which will be conducting the centralised admission process, will be doing so on the basis of CMAT scores only. The results of the CMAT which was conducted in May might delay the admission process if GD and PI are conducted, claimed an official.

The All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) compels the DTE to start the academic season on time in colleges. Since admission process will start by the second week of June, the first round of admissions will not get over by June 30 if the usual process is followed. The idea is to complete the first round by the end of June and therefore the directorate has scrapped the GD and PI process. An official notification to this effect will be released soon.

Preference will be given to CMAT takers in this year's management admission process. If seats are vacant after the three rounds of admissions, students will be admitted on the basis of other entrance exams conducted across the country, including CAT.

CMAT Additional Test Was The Simplest: Students
May 23, 2013

The  Third (Additional Test) Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) 2013  - conducted for admissions in MBA courses across the country - ridiculed the previous two tests (held in September'12 and February'13) by its simplicity.

Approximately 48,000 students took the entrance test from May 19 to May 22 which was very less as compared to February CMAT which saw more than 1 lakh students appearing. It was very much expected that the number of test takers is going to fall because the test was scheduled almost last minute. Moreover, students who had appeared for the previous attempts, WERE NOT allowed to take this one.

The paper is divided in to 4 sections Quant, Logic, Verbal and General Awareness.

After overall analysis of the test, sources have told Stupidsid that the Logic and Quant were a cakewalk for most of the students while the Verbal, which is supposedly the toughest section of CMAT, lived upto it's reputation especially when it came to Reading Comprehensions (RCs) and Critical Reasoning. And the 'so called' General Awareness wasn't really GENERAL. It was filled with static GK questions which came as a surprise to many applicants.

As there were 3 CMATs conducted by the much criticised AICTE for admissions to B-Schools in 2013-15, rank is an ambiguous factor in determining the merit and hence, score is most important. For those who appeard in May, have a fair chance to sail through.

Shabbir, an MBA aspirant who took the CMAT on 20th May, had some issues with the interface of the test. "The long passages and arrangement of questions weren't word wrapped and thus I had to read the long text in a single line using horizontal scroll which was very tedious and challenging. Fortunately, there were very simple linear arrangement questions in the logic section which didn't bother much", as told to the Stupidsid Reporter.

According to our sources, no errors were encountered during the 4 days of the tests, which is generally AICTE's forte.

Another student Ganesh who took the test on May 21 found the Quant Section tricky and formula based, whereas the rest of the paper was very much scoring.

The result of this test will be declared on June 1 in a staggering 10 days time which comes as a surpise to the students but a compulsion for AICTE, so as to bring the already delayed admissions on track. We are anticipating that soon after the results the GD and PI's round will begin, followed by the final merit lists and the CAP rounds.

Due to the delayed admissions process, many students have already secured admits from various other B-Schools for their PGDM courses on basis of February CMAT as the colleges didn't want to delay the PGDM admissions by waiting for May CMAT results.

In a nutshell, the additional CMAT attempt was much simpler than the February and could serve as a golden chance for students seeking admissions in to PGDM and MMS courses across the country.

AICTE to hold Third CMAT for 2013-14 batch
Feb 22, 2013

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) will conduct a third Common Management Admission test (CMAT) for admissions to the 2013-14 batch. This CMAT, proposed to be held from May 17 to 20, will be open for those candidates who were unable to take the test in the first two sessions.

While three days ago, the news from the AICTE board stated that the third CMAT test will be conducted only for students in the states of Karnataka, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh. This latest update from the council will bring relief to thousands of students from all parts of India who either missed the the two tests or did not perform upto the mark.

"Several states had issued a late CMAT notification and students were unable to take the test. We plan to hold the third CMAT from May 17 to 20. This is the only year, when we would conduct a third CMAT," said SS Mantha, chairman of AICTE. Students, who are appearing for the test again, can use the best of their scores in both the CMATs.

CMAT to be held again in May
Feb 19, 2013

Bringing relief to thousands of MBA aspirants seeking seats under the government quota, the All-India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has decided to have another testing window of the Common Management Admission Test (CMAT) in May  for students in Karnataka, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh.

The Karnataka Examinations Authority had put in a request to the AICTE to hold another test as only 3,000 students had applied for CMAT-2. The AICTE is conducting two CMATs — one was held in September–October last year, and another is scheduled for this week. Both had elicited poor response from students in the State, who were expecting PGCET for admissions to MBA.

S.S. Mantha, chairman, AICTE, said the council had considered the request from the Karnataka government and decided to grant another testing window for students who will not be able to write CMAT-2 scheduled from February 21 to 25. The registration for CMAT-2 ended on January 13 (See below).

“A test will be conducted sometime around mid-May for students in Karnataka, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh as the State governments had placed requests for this. During the AICTE council meeting recently, we decided to give another opportunity to students in these States to write the CMAT,” he said. The dates will be finalised and announced soon.

He clarified that this would not be a “third test”, but only another opportunity for those who were not able to apply for either CMAT-1 or CMAT-2.

As of today, there are about 24,500 MBA seats under government quota in 436 colleges in the State. Students who do not attempt CMAT will have to wait a year if they want a government MBA seat. Last year, close to 19,000 students had appeared for the PGCET conducted by the KEA.
