7 Grace Marks to HSC Students
Feb 26, 2013

The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has decided to grant seven grace marks to Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC or Class XII) students who had attempted set ‘B’ for Saturday’s English language exam.

Over half a decade, the board has been sending out multiple sets of question papers for English and Mathematics in order to avoid any posibble malpractices like copying. Accordingly, four sets of question papers - A, B, C and D - were distributed for the English language exam on Saturday.

"The decision was taken as mistakes were noticed in the “unseen passage” questions i.e. questions “5 (A) and (B)”, the board said.

Board chairman, Sarjerao Jadhav, admitted that there were errors in the question paper and thus grace marks will be given to those who attempted it. Out of all the questions of the unseen passage, only one question was related to the passage.

Jadhav said, “The entire question carried eight marks but only one question was correct. Students who attempted that question will get seven grace marks.” He also clarified that those students who have not attempted this question will not be given grace marks.

HSC Board Exams will finish on March 26th (atleast for the Science stream) with Chemistry paper (See Previous News for perfect TimeTable).

Retake HSC exams twice from 2013
Jan 3, 2013

It is becoming simpler and utter rubbish to get into Engineering or any other desired undergraduate courses with the State Secondary Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) board providing relief to millions of students within the state by allowing them to retake the SSC and HSC exam twice in a year.

The news that broke out on Jan 2nd might come as a boon to many students who have consistently underperformed in the state level exams. Starting this year, the importance of HSC exams have become extremely vital, especially for the Science students, as admissions to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) will have a significant weightage (top 20 percentile) of the board exams along with the ISEET - Common Entrance Test for IIT, NIT and other regional colleges.

"The HSC board exams over the past 6 years have shown a plummeted graph in the pass percentage. This decision will enhance the education system, aggravate the results and increase the literacy rate", quotes the authority. "A student who appears for the HSC exam in February 2013 and unfortunately does not clear it, s/he gets two more attempts in October'13 and March'14. The best out of the three scores will be considered", he added.

Undoubtedly, the niche section of the society is unhappy with the call as it'll not make the exams competent. "Undergrad education plays a very important role in any students academic career and this decision will leave a negative impact on the quality of the students and thus, the entire system. Steps should be taken to improve the already worsened education system and this is not the right method. One exam that will be repeated twice within the academic year will certainly not meet the education standards", says a parent.

But on a very general note, what has been the main objective behind this? I do not see any positives of this decision. Rather, I find it very asinine of the board committee to come up with such a rule. If a student does not clear the board exams, s/he anyways looses a year completely. Retaking the exam in October would anyway give him an admission in the next batch. So, retaking the exam again in March would not at all make sense. On the contrary, the board has simply burdened them with unrequired work of setting multiple papers. Moreover, a major survey divulges that HSC board exams ARE NOT at all difficult to pass. Scoring 80% might not be a overnight task but passing the exam is definitely manageable. With such a ridiculous decision for a not-so-difficult exam and still loosing a year, where is the SSC and HSC board heading to? It is very important to take necessary steps to improve the standards of education system and pass percentage in a very systematic and urban manner.

HSC board exams will begin from 21st Feb, 2013 and MT CET will be held on 16th May, 2013.
