JEE Main (earlier AIEEE) was introduced last year as an entrance test for admissions to the top engineering colleges in India including the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). Students seeking admission to the IITs have to clear the JEE Main followed by JEE Advanced which is to be held on May 25.

While until last year state entrance tests were conducted for engineering, medicine, pharmacy admissions, this year the states of Odisha, Maharashtra and Gujarat have decided to scrap their respective CETs. Admissions to engineering colleges in these states will be based on JEE Main.

The Merit Rank for National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and State Engineering Colleges will be prepared on the basis of 40% weightage to respective 12th board exam marks and 60% JEE Main scores.

Online Application Forms for JEE Main will be available between November 15 to December 26. This is the first year where the entire admission process is held online (from online form filling to uploading the photo and e-payment). Candidates can pay the application fee via credit/debit cards or through e-challan of Syndicate, Canara and ICICI Bank.

This year, too, the JEE Main will be held both online (computer based test) and offline (pen-paper based test).

  1. Pen-Paper based test: April 6, 2014 (9.30 am).
  2. Computer based test: April 9, 11, 12 and 19 on either of the two slots (candidate preference) - 9.30 am to 12.30 pm or 2 pm to 5 pm.

Results of JEE Main 2014 shall be tentaively announced on May 3, 2014.

JEE Advanced 2014 Dates Announced
October 08, 2013 | All India

The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced for admissions to 16 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and ISM Dhanbad for the year 2014 will be held on Sunday, May 25.

Admissions to the IITs from 2013 are based on the two step process - 1. Qualifying the JEE Main (earlier AIEEE) and 2. Appearing for JEE Advanced.

The two level examination which was incepted a year ago did face myriad of problems at the time of admission especially in calculating percentiles of various State and Central Boards. Also the entire admission process to NITs and IITs was highly unorganised and delayed, owing to which many state engineering colleges completed their admissions before  IITs started their central admission process. This led to many vacant seats in IITs, NITs and state colleges.

While there were reported news about the JEE Advanced to become a Subjective Test (No Multiple Choice Questions; check Previous News), it looks a far fetched thought for the coming admission season in 2014.

JEE Advanced Date and Timings:

Sunday, May 25

  1. Paper 1: 9 am to 12 pm
  2. Paper 2: 2 pm to 5 pm

CBSE Proposes Two JEE Main from 2014
Sept. 12, 2013 | All India

It was stressful enough for students when the single Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) for IIT was split into two - Mains and Advanced – this year. Now, the CBSE board, which conducts the JEE Mains, is proposing two Main tests for 2014 - one in February and the other in April. The final decision on this will be taken at a meeting of the Joint Entrance Examination Apex body on September 17.

A senior CBSE official confirmed that such a proposal is afoot.“The logic is that candidates can take both the exams and the best score of the two will be considered for the JEE-Advanced. Students get a second chance,”he said.

An additional test will add to the blitzkrieg of exams that students have to answer, and pile up preparation pressure on them. The board exams for the state board, CBSE as well as ICSE are conducted in February. Students of ICSE and state board will have to study separate portions of the CBSE syllabus to prepare for the first of the JEE Mains, also to be held in February.

The CBSE official said it would be ensured that the JEE-Main exam dates in February do not clash with the February board exams. But that does not ease studying pressure for students. It merely allows them to take both the exams.

The other possible fallout of a JEE Main in February is that preoccupation with it could affect a students’ board exam performance adversely. And this in turn will have an impact their chances of qualifying for IIT which has introduced a policy this year that successful candidates, even if they have cleared the JEE-Advanced, must be among the top-20 percentile scorers in the class XII exams of their respective boards.

While the JEE-Main exam qualifies students for engineering institutes like NITs and IIITs, IIT aspirants have to nail both the Main and the Advanced, and also do well in their class XII board exams.

While the JEE Main, an eligibility test for the JEEAdvanced, is conducted by the CBSE, JEE Advanced is jointly conducted by the seven zonal IITs.

JEE Advanced 2014 Might Be A Subjective Test
April 16, 2013 | All India

The new pattern proposed for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced by IIT-Bombay for admissions to IITs in 2014 will not have Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs); it will be subjective but students will not have to write long answers in the proposed pattern.

Students will be told to solve problems and write answers. There will not be any need to give a step-wise solution to the problem. Even for descriptive answers, in the new format, questions may be asked in the form of 'fill in the blanks' or 'complete the following'.

Even before the new pattern, JEE Main and JEE Advanced 2013 - for admissions to IITs, NITs, etc. - is yet to kickoff, the board has decided to change the examination pattern for the JEE Advanced test for admissions in the academic year 2014-15.

IIT-B director Devang Khakhar said, "The proposed format is somewhere between the two formats. Students will not have to write long, descriptive answers. They will have to get answers on their own as there will be no options". The proposed format will test students on their understanding of the subject.

It is yet to get approval from senates of other IITs. After they accept the proposal, it will be presented at the joint admission board meeting.
