With the admissions going around in every nook and corner of the country, India's so called 'top rated' course - Engineering - is in a big mess with the entire schedule for the academic year 2013-14 as the premiere engineering institutes - Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) - are yet to start with their undergraduate admissions leaving over 10 lakh engineering aspirants in a trouble.

With the admissions going around in every nook and corner of the country, India's so called 'top rated' course - Engineering - is in a big mess with the entire schedule for the academic year 2013-14 as the premiere engineering institutes - Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs) - are yet to start with their undergraduate admissions leaving over 10 lakh engineering aspirants in a trouble.
While many state engineering colleges like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat are almost done with their Online Registrations and are going to declare the Merit Ranks in less than a weeks time, the IITs and NIT are much behind the schedule.
Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) which takes care of the admissions to the IITs have declared the dates for option form filling from June 24 to June 30 and the allotment on July 4; by which admissions to many state level colleges will be completed. Moreover, National Institutes of Technology will declare the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Main Ranks on July 7.
Generally, IITs are the first to start with their admission followed by NITs and then state engineering colleges. However, this year, the calendar has gone upside down which will leave many average scorers hardly with any choice.
Allotment for Maharashtra CAP Round 1 and 2 is scheduled on June 26th and July 6th respectively. Karnataka Engineering Admissions Allotment for Round 1 is scheduled on June 26. Tamil Nadu Rank Lists are already declared and the counselling is held from June 21 to June 30.
The advantage of IIT and NIT admission process finishing off earlier is that students can look out for the best colleges in their own state/city. The risk factor with the same is minimal and students can wait for further rounds to ensure they get their desired college.
Dhaval from Mumbai who has scored 119 in MT-CET told the Stupidsid Reporter, "It's a chaos. I've applied to DJ Sanghvi and KJ Somaiya under Gujarati Quota and hoping to get into one of them. What I am scared about is if I secure a seat in DJ under any stream and get my desired stream in KJ, I'll quit DJ. And once the admissions for IITs and NITs begin, most of the top scores from DJ would prefer to choose IIT and NIT leaving a vacant seat in the college. And once you quit from a college, you cannot retain your seat. That's a terrible mistake by various boards,"
So what's ridiculous is that many students will have to compromise on their options and settle with any college irrespective of a vacant seat.
"I don't know why there is always a drama at the time of admissions. This is about our career. We can't settle with any college because of the irresponsible schedule of the various boards. My seniors have told me to be very cautious before withdrawing admissions from any college as my scores are moderate", said a frustrated Nayan, who has scored 188 in JEE Main and 139 in MT CET, to the Stupidsid Reporter.
Students are certainly going to suffer a lot because of this chaotic and uncoordinated schedule. If the deadlines for many state engineering colleges are extended, there will be some respite for the mid and low rankers.
