The Indian School of Mines boasts of a sprawling 393 acres campus (with 218 acres of existing campus and 175 acres under acquisition and development). The architectural style of the buildings on campus is a blend of British architecture and modern-day architecture. Being a fully residential campus, The academic buildings like those belonging to a particular department, the library, the placement cell etc. have both, Wi-Fi as well as LAN access. The Central Library houses much more books, thesis and CDs than you would need in your 4 years. It is a completely automated library which provides services seven days a week. Also a new Central Library, projected to be the largest academic library in the country, is under construction and is expected to be ready by the end of 2014. The entire library is bar coded.
The institute comprises several laboratories many of which are sponsored by the Industry and some by the government agencies like the Department of Science and Technology, the UGC, the AICTE, etc. ISM being a highly funded institute, the laboratories consist of facilities for cutting edge research in science and technology.
Additionally, the campus has a health centre, a computer centre, 2 SBI ATMs, a Sub-Post Office, a Nescafe outlet, a Subway outlet in addition to the institute canteen and stationary shops.

ISM consists of 10 halls of residence, 8 for boys and 2 for girls. Some hostels age back to 1926 while others came up eventually with the diversification and growth of the institute since its inception. The hostels are allotted on a twin share basis. All the hostels have LAN connectivity in each room, in addition to separate mess and canteens.

The mess food at ISM is just like the mess food at any other institute. Sometimes you like it, sometimes you hate it. But yes, its never like your “ghar ka khaana”.

For the batch admitted through IIT-JEE 2012, out of a total 924 students, 77 are girls. The Boy/Girl ratio of the institute is low as compared to other institutes but is improving day by day.
Students being admitted through examinations like IIT-JEE (now JEE Advanced), GATE, NET, CAT etc. the student community at ISM is a blend of people coming from all parts of the country, having different languages, religions and cultures.
The institute has a vibrant campus life. There are several clubs and councils where one can pursue his/her hobby and also learn new skills. ISM has all facilities for sports like swimming pool, badminton courts, volleyball courts, squash complex etc. ISM also hosted some of the events of the 34th National Games.
The senior-junior interaction is one of the most important aspect of ISM campus life. Eventually, there is hardly any instance of ragging.

The Indian School of Mines has had a legacy in the areas of earth sciences since its inception in 1926. Even though, today ISM is no longer just an earth science school, its contribution in the areas of earth sciences has been and will be of utmost importance. The Indian School of Mines also helps the Government of Bangladesh in its mineral resource planning. It is also the mentor University for setting up of Institute of Mining for the government of Afghanistan. ISM has international collaboration with 14 institutes located in 11 countries. ISM is the man power provider to 15 sectors and is a think tank for 11 ministries of the Government of India.
Although ISM is under the consideration of MHRD for an upgradation to an IIT, it still is not an IIT. Anyone who does not want to let go of the status of being an IITian should not come to this institute. Also, even though Dhanbad is a pretty decent cities, ISM is not a place for people expecting a life like those in a metro. However, Dhanbad is a completely safe city.
ISM was ranked 11th in India in the Outlook Engineering Colleges survey of 2013 and also of 2012. It has been consistently ranked among the top engineering colleges of India by Outlook magazine. ISM does not participate in ranking surveys by other magazines due to their low credibility.
A top 5000 rank in JEE Advanced would fetch a desired branch in the Institute.
