Students are full of praise for the faculty members, who are very understanding and sympathetic towards students and their requirements. There is a good mix of senior and junior professors, and all of them are comfortable communicating with students in English, Hindi or Marathi. Most lectures are conducted primarily in English, but professors take out extra time and make extra efforts for students from vernacular medium schools.

Gonsalo Garcia College was the first degree college of Vasai, and it has been maintained quite well. Classrooms and bathrooms are clean, while the library is pretty well stocked. The computer labs are air-conditioned, and one of them has internet connectivity. There is really good infrastructure for all kinds of sports as well; they have a cricket pitch for net-practice, a basketball court, and a multi-purpose ground which can double up as on ‘open-air auditorium’.

Well you wouldn’t expect out-of-the-world placements in a slightly remote college. But if you manage to keep your aggregate well about 60%, and also maintain a good rapport with your teachers, you stand a chance of being ‘chosen’ for the placement process when companies to come visiting. IDBI, HDFC and some IT firms visit the campus for recruitment, but do not pick up too many students. Packages range from about Rs.10,000 to Rs. 25,000 per month.

Gonsalo Garcia College (better known as GG College), isn’t exactly too close to Vasai Road railway station. It’s virtually impossible to walk to college, but fortunately there are enough means to get here. Rickshaws take Rs.18 per person from the station to college for the 8 km drive, while you can also take an ST bus, which would just cost you Rs.2, provided you have the concession pass from college. Most students who come from nearby try getting their own vehicles, so seeing them zooming around the place on bikes isn’t uncommon. While you can also take an ST bus. Well, the less said about it the better. Although a number of students do eat the canteen food, hygiene is a constant complaint. Many students prefer limiting their canteen visits only to times when they’re in dire need of a soft-drink. They choose to eat at ‘khau galli’ right outside the college instead.

To be fair, the area around the college is pretty picturesque, so there isn’t really much need to ever get out of campus. But when students do move out, they normally just go to the beach, or to the nearby Vasai Fort. Roaming around aimlessly on bikes is also a common pastime for GG college students.

The crowd is majorly Catholic, as is the case in most of Vasai. That’s why you’ll come across a lot of students who would choose Marathi over any other language in the world. Nonetheless, they’re all extremely mixing and friendly, and actively participate in sports, games and festivals. The college is known for its sports teams; believe it or not, they even have Boxing as a sport.

There are a number of cultural and sports activities taking place throughout the academic year. The cultural fest, Horizons, is organized by the student council in December and is actively participated in.

The college isn’t too strict about attendance, though you’re expected to maintain a respectable percentage of attendance. Many students are blacklisted, and their parents are called every once in a while. If you manage maintaining above 50% attendance, you should be fine, else it reflects badly on your grades.

It’s a good college if you live in that side of the world. Good atmosphere, friendly people, and co-operative staff. Not bad at all.
