Surely the economy is slowing down and India can forsee another recession. It has hit so hard that even the premiere engineering instituions of the country have hiked their subsidised tuition fee by 80% from this academic year. Yes, the Indian Institutes of Technology - India's Marvel Engineering Institutes - have hiked their fee and will now be charging Rs. 90,000 per annum.

Some members of the IIT council have proposed a tuition fee of around Rs. 2 lakh per annum (Rs. 8 lakhs for four years) but the prospal might be turned down for such an inexorbitant tuition fee. The final decision regarding this will be made on Monday (Jan 7th) but the hike is definite. Last time the IITs raised their fee was in the academic year 2008-09 from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 50,000. The IIT fee structure had to be restructured as even the leading B-schools - Indian Instiutes of Management (IIMs) - charge around 6 lakhs per annum (12 lpa for the entire course). Moreover, a lot of second rung private engineering colleges charge a tuition fee as high as Rs. 2 lakh/annum. The revised fee was necessary as the overall standards needs to be improvised and better facilites and ammenities should be given to the bright minds of the country.

While none of the IIT campus have a jaw dropping infrastructure, the new entrants have made their campus top notch. For instance, IIT-Jodhpur has set up a solar field to meet most of its energy needs and IIT Mandi is also using green technology to build its campus. With the hike very much in the pipeline, the 'to be IITians' can expect

  • Air conditioned lecture halls
  • Better hostel facilies (bigger rooms, clean sheets and separate bathrooms)
  • Highly Advanced labs and equipements
  • Enhanced sports facilities
  • Green Technology

We hope the hike in the fees for IITs will prove to be extremely beneficial to the students and the education system.

JEE Main exam will be held on 7th April 2013 (offline) and 8th April to 25th April (online) & JEE Advanced is scehduled on June 2nd 2013.
