Engineer at NLC Nalco India Ltd.

Mitesh Gangar

  • Graduation college: Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Matunga, Mumbai
  • Stream: Chemical Engineering
  • Graduation aggregate: 84%
  • Standout Quality: Participating in Extra curriculars is definitely an advantage. It gives a platform to showcase your technical/ cultural skills as well as leadership qualities. (I participated and won prizes in a variety of technical events, including paper presentations and quizzes. I was the overall coordinator of the college newsletter - The Spirit. Also, I was the Jt. Sec(Events) for the college Technical Festival - Exergy).

I did a project which was related to the company's operations in Air services (Nalco Mobotec).
As a part of our UG course, I did an In-plant training at Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (Mumbai refinery). I was a parallel industry and so the experience helped.

What I do:

  • Posted: in Pune
  • Designation: Engineer

Job Description:

I was appointed as Engineer for the Pune Technology Centre of the Nalco Company. It is a R&D based profile. The profile is quite niche and requires a good knowledge in chemistry as well as engineering. It is a mix of consulting as well as research.
Work comprises of providing advanced technical support to the regional and global Sales and Marketing team so as to provide effective solutions to the problems our (prospective) customers are facing. This includes doing various tests in lab as well as on field, along with thorough literature survey to provide solutions. I work in the Upstream Energy Services division and since oil field chemicals is a highly competitive business, almost 80% of our products are killed within 5 years of their invention. So, there is a continuous need to develop better solutions to the existing problems as well as effective solutions for newer problems/challenges.

Experience at Work:

Its an MNC and the working environment is simply superb. More than 75% of people in our department hold advanced technical degrees (Masters/ Ph.D.s) and so, the atmosphere is quite stimulating, intellectually. Its 8 hrs a day - 5 days a week job. The job profile is quite unique and unlike the regular on-plant or design jobs offered on campuses for chemical engineers. The stipulated working time is 8:30 to 5:00 but there are no fixed time limits. You can choose to adjust your working hours based on the specific requirements on the job (Many a times, there are conference calls to US/ Singapore and you have to adjust your day accordingly)

Advice to the juniors:

Be yourself throughout the recruiting process. Please don't fake achievements/ activities. Don't fall into the trap of considering CTC as the prime factor for deciding whether you want to apply for a particular company.
