Proud to be an Arts student

When I was five, there was this question that people loved throwing at me-“What do you want to become when you grow up?” With zero hesitation, a focused look and motivation in my eyes, I used to say “I want to become a construction worker, because I like climbing and painting” It used to result in bubble of laughter as everyone probably found my answer funnily intriguing. Fast forward to ten years and I got the same question thrown at me, only at a higher frequency. Thankfully my answer also changed J so when my aunties and uncles asked me what is it that I wanted to become, I replied with the same kind of look. I said I wanted to be something different. They looked at me like a alien had just popped out in front of them and waved.

“What does that mean? Do you want to be a doctor, an engineer, a lawyer?” “No” I replied, “I’m more into literature, psychology, journalism, languages and stuff”. With each passing word I could see the shock form up in their faces. How could the daughter of a computer science graduate and a zoology graduate end up like this?! So when I got into the best arts college in Mumbai, I shocked a lot of people. And it felt awesome. I’m proud to say that I did something I wanted to do.  People still make fun of me, they are sure I’ve gone bonkers. But I  know what I’m doing, and I know I’ll do it right. So when my science friends come around and tell me” Man your life must be such a breeze, you’re an arts student”, I just have to stop myself from rolling my eyes at them. Sure, my life is easier than yours, but we don’t get taught A, B, C. We also have assignments, projects, reports and a variety of other things. The only difference is that I’m enjoying it. And that’s what everyone needs to do. Its so simple, ENJOY whatever you do!
