The Other Brain

"THOUGHTS DON'T HAVE TO BE TRUE, THEY JUST HAVE TO BE BELIEVED"

My family members are great conversationalists and topping this chart is my grandmother. Certain topics are spoken daily. One of them is "some family members are horrible in maths" . Needless to say, my name topped that chart of the mathematically challenged. In school too, I barely managed to pass every term ( I still wonder how?!?!).  And till date I don't understand how one finds surface area or the need to prove LHS equals RHS! Eventually, I got into a reputed college and chose ARTS (because it was the only stream which wouldn't ask me to find the distance, perimeter, radius, area and God knows what else) OR SO I THOUGHT!!

I had applied for a degree in psychology, not knowing that the ghosts of the past were still there to haunt me. The problem that stood between me and my degree was STATISTICS. It was not easy, especially since it turned out to be a branch of mathematics. I was terrified. (terrified is a mild word).

One fine day I decided to switch over to Philosophy. Why take chances? Better to be safe than sorry. I bravely went up to my psychology professor and explained my story to her. She said, "Oh! Is that all? You're going to be awesome in statistics". I looked at her, confused as ever. "That's right, you're going to do well because you've got the other type of brain. You'll get an A grade for sure. I don't know why but I believed every word she said.

Eventually I told all the conversationalists at home that I was going to do well in Stats, NO MATTER WHAT. I realized attitude is a small thing that makes a BIG difference. The new realization of my other type of brain was seen in my grades. I was finally doing well.

When the final year arrived, I was at my best behaviour and did everything that a good student does. I attended my practicals and I stuck to my goal. In spite of my other type of brain, it took a lot of hardwork, time, effort and a private tutor as well!

But it all paid off. I received my degree in Psychology with pride. I was no longer mathematically challenged. I ran to find my Psychology professor. I reached the staffroom and there she was telling her first year students that they've all got the special other type of brain. She looked in my direction and winked,"You'd be surprised how often it works. The mind is wonderful, isn't it ?" I realised that there are no limitations or restrictions except the restrictions of one's own mind!
