Now that’s where Dayanand Sagar College of Engineering (DSCE) takes a hitting but not the “Department of Architecture”. Permanent faculty members are wonderful, friendly and students are pretty much satisfied with their teaching. Experienced teachers from other architecture colleges as well as practicing architects form an army of visiting faculty thus giving enough exposure to students in various fields.

The college is part of the gargantuan Dayanand Sagar Institutions (DSI) campus which spreads of acres of land and is home to several other sister institutes. As you enter the campus on your bike, you are directed to the parking lot which is humungous with hundreds of bikes parked every day (Parking is charged at Rs. 5/- every day and doesn’t go down well with everyone). Infrastructure on the whole is terrific; buildings, libraries, classrooms, labs, Wi-Fi, e-books, everything.
But two things that bother architecture students is that there’s just one floor dedicated to architecture (no separate block) and thus it’s being treated as part of the engineering college, although architecture is something entirely different. Plans are on to very soon shift to a new campus, but students wait till it becomes a reality.

Dayanand Sagar College of Engineering (DSCE) is in South-Central Bangalore’s Kumaraswamy Layout close to Banashankari. Bus services provided by BMTC are fantastic in the central areas of Bangalore and this college is one amongst many other institutions which benefit by this awesome service. However, few students here are known to make use of BMTC buses as half of them reside in the hostels and the others commute by their own two wheelers.

The DSI campus has two kinds of hostels; the “NRI” hostel which isn’t restricted to only NRIs but is offered to anyone who can afford it. So if you want all the luxuries of a twin-sharing air-conditioned room equipped with a television and some more additional facilities, get ready to shell out at least double of what those chaps at the “Indian” hostel pay. Yes, that’s what they call it, an almost dilapidated hostel offering four-sharing, non-A/C, non-TV rooms at half the price.

Altogether 4 or 5 canteens lay spread out around the campus. The NRI canteen is perhaps the biggest, most hygienic appearing and costliest one amongst all. But it serves great food. Besides that, there’s an Indian canteen which mostly serves South-Indian snacks and one or two Nescafe-like stalls. Food is generally not an issue nor is the variety of food.

You’ll find few places real close to the college but within 10-15 minute driving distance there’s every food, drinks & movie place you can think of. And with enough relaxation in attendance allowed, hanging out for big spans of time is what you won’t be able to escape while at Dayanand Sagar College of Engineering (DSCE)

Perhaps the best part of the entire Dayanand Sagar Institutions (DSI) campus. A very colorful crowd with a healthy mix of girls and boys all blending around perfectly. In the architecture department, girls outnumber the guys by a good margin. Students from Bangalore form a majority with just about 25% of the students coming from outside. Most, however, get frustrated on being treated as ‘Engineers’.

Every year an inter college festival is celebrated at Dayanand Sagar College of Engineering (DSCE) sometime in April. Departmental festivals are also organized by students of each department thus making festivals an all-round-the-year affair.

The Department of Architecture at DSCE is pretty strict when it comes to attendance issues. 85% is recommended and 75% is officially allowed if necessary medical documents are available. Below 75% is manageable if you have a good rapport with the faculty but if it’s way below that, you won’t be allowed to appear for the exams.

With few colleges in Bangalore offering architecture, there’s not much choice for architecture enthusiasts. Out of whatever’s available, it’s not a bad pick considering the overall campus environment, but there are surely better colleges around. So unless your best friend is getting in here and you cannot live without him/her, try for a better college.

The architecture college earlier used to be a separate entity which was later shut and reopened a few years after as part of the Engineering College. It, thus, became eligible to participate in NASA only from 2011. So not too many trophies in its kitty till now.
