The senior professors constitute to at least a 50% of the total strength of the faculty members. The seniors are obviously experienced and good teachers. Moreover they are agreeably efficient and helpful, so much that even at odd times they are approachable. The issue here is with the ad-hoc professors, most of which are fresh B.E. pass-outs and have acute ego and attitude problems, and are far from being humble, students find this very ironic looking at the senior professors who are way better. Theory lectures as well as practical sessions are conducted regularly but during most of the practicals students sit and copy down assignments. So the students lack a practical exposure much needed for the course, but now things are said to be improving slowly. Department wise: ECE department has the most supportive faculties. Lectures to the 1st and 2nd year students are mostly delivered in Gujarati, so that the students find it easy to cope-up, while the later years English is the medium of instructions.

Shifted from the polytechnic campus in 2007, the GEC campus looks sprawling, and vast. All the departments are planned out in different blocks spread across the campus. The campus is certainly well planned, and consciously maintained spacious. The classes are absolutely comfortable and designed to maximize natural ventilation. Lab has issues though, things work at the pace of a snail, and equipment are still under procurement so the labs are still not established or absolutely settled. Government procedures and protocols need to be followed, which in the end upsets the students. There are these issues of equipment not functioning, but students say that the metallurgy department is the worst hit. The dejected students fail to realize where all the funds the college receives from the government goes, as it certainly does not go towards the development of the college infrastructure beyond a point. The college library has books only pertaining to the syllabus, but the number of copies fall short during exam times. The college does have subscription to Journals, and magazines. Wi-fi internet is accessible in the campus, and every department has its own setup, and is obviously free to use. The gymkhana provided by the college is nice and also charges a fee, but is ridiculously not allowed for the students. That’s when the Boys’ Common Room and the girls’ common room come to rescue. The Gymnasium is also decked up with good equipment, but students say that even that’s just for a show. Washrooms the students say are ‘almost’ clean, while drinking water is available at the coolers, which are erratic. The security has now been tightened and is better now.

This factor is has always been the biggest concern of students at Government Engineering College. The TPO as students say is as unbothered for the placements, as the principal is for the college. The students are ready to do anything to improve here, but the college is not even registered with many companies who visit campuses for recruitments. ECE and Bio-Med departments have no core placements in relevant companies, while it’s a little better for IC & Comps. Every batch (including the nerds) does their best, but labs need to be established, so that students have the practical exposure they need to serve a company, in the end it’s the students who suffer, a lot! Only some seniors have managed to get placed, and that’s a constant source of worry for most. Many turn towards higher education; ME or MBA for brighter job prospects. As a ray of hope, students say if common GTU placements are planned, things might change drastically. Regarding IDP and UDP; those who take up IDP, there is a lot of communication gap between the students and the companies which the college needs to bridge. While UDP works more like the game of ‘kho-kho’ where juniors take up a project where seniors had left, and continue from there, adding about 40-50% of their own development. No off campus projects are allowed yet.

If there were one place that’s difficult to reach in a tiny city like Gandhinagar, it would be Government Engineering College. At the edge of Sector-28, GIDC; getting to the college is difficult and is about 10km from Pathik Ashram (the central bus terminal of Gandhinagar). No VTCOS city buses ply right up to the college. Most students travelling from Ahmedabad get to Pathik Ashram by GSRTC buses, and then from there it’s a fight and students somehow manage. GIDC area is quite remote, and hence some hassles prevail. Sector 26 is residential, and many have their PG flats here, so for them it’s much easier. Again since it’s not ‘in’ the city, establishments around are few, no mobile recharges, no stationary store, and the general hustle-bustle of the city (Gandhinagar is slow-paced anyway). But again, being cut-off from the city is pleasant because there is certain calmness around.

The college has a girls hostel in the campus, it is just normal and so are the fees at a meager Rs.1,000 for the entire semester. The new hostel is expected to be much better for about Rs.2,000 per semester. There is a boys' hostel in making and expected to be opened pretty soon. Many PG accommodations are also available around Sector-26, cost of which can go up to Rs.7,000 a month including food and electricity. Living at the PGs’ is no less of a struggle for those who come from a non-Gujarati background.

That’s one nice thing about the college that students recommend; “The space is large, the seating is nice, the quality (of food) good and the quantity suffice.” Okay, seriously the food is tasty, and the canteen offers a wide range for students to select, and not get bored of same stuff every day. The food is cheap, and doesn’t compromise on the quality or the quality. Vada Pav and Uthappam are popular here and cost Rs.10 and 20 respectively.

Well frankly, you would have to try hard to find a group that would love to enjoy and spend time with friends without any academic pretexts. But of course once you do find a group for yourself, there are a lot of places to camp out to. The closest being the InfoCity complex, which is where all the major food joints of the city are located; pizzas, Ice creams, juices, sandwiches it’s all there. If you wish to head towards Ahmedabad, there is ISCON mall on the S.G.Highway. R3 mall near the university area is another option. Balaji Agora is far, but can also be considered. There are a couple of roadside dhabas where hostel-ites generally head to for cheap and incredibly tasty food.

Demographically about 80% students are Gujarati speaking and are from Gujarat itself. About 50% of all the students belong to Gandhinagar & Ahmedabad, while the other half comes from the entire state, and one out of every six student is a non-Gujarati. Not that they have issues with getting along with people, but their stay at the PGs’ takes time to settle. Crowd is friendly and helpful with people from diverse backgrounds getting along effortlessly. Although there is a very small section of what the girls would say ‘cheap’ crowd but they thankfully live in their own little worlds, without harassing others. Yet academically a majority of students are nerds who strongly believe in rote learning, rather than conceptual understanding. Well, so is the state of most of the engineering colleges in the country, so never mind it. Very few people participate in extra-curricular events and students say about 40% or so would be ready for hanging out or chilling rather than just going home after college.

Nothing. Yes, till now the college has just witnessed ONE Techfest in the entire history of the college. But there are a few other days celebrated at the college by Yuva Group; Shaheed Din – 23rd March, Independence Day – 15th August, and people participate, may be out of obligation.

At Government Engineering College, having an attendance above 70% is expected, but students say if you fail to keep that, parents are informed, and penalty in terms of assignments or extra lectures could be taken. There have been cases where people with 20% attendance have not been detained because they’ve had genuine reasons, so the college is not very harsh, until there’s something really fishy. The faculties do not hold personal grudges against students so that’s cool. In fact the faculty is at ease even if you do not attend a lecture and rather hang out in the campus or canteen. But if you attend they expect you to be sincere and interested.

Okay, with things changing (at a slow pace), you can get what the seniors or the passed out students have not been able to make use of. Placements still remain a major issue. Being a government college, the fees are attractive, but it comes for a high price. Our advice, work hard and have fun. Placements you can leave it to destiny, or if you are planning for higher studies, the college provides enough freedom and time to pursue it.
