Being relatively new, GNLU doesn’t have teachers that have spent decades teaching at the college like many other reputed institutes of the country would have. But anyway the students still appreciate the faculties and are satisfied with the teaching. Students in one voice claimed that 4 out of every 5 teachers are good, while the 5th lags behind a bit. The faculties taking the core law subjects in the later years are exceptional and highly experienced. A few subjects that are taught by the experienced professors are, Constitutional Law, Contract Law, Administrative Law, Political Sciences, and International Relations & Theoretical Economics. Well to split up the faculties, in a general opinion students say about 80% of the teachers do their job well, 15% are exceptionally good and go out-of-the-way with their subjects, and the remaining 5% are just below average. But as a student remarks, the administrative system may disillusion you about educational institutions, but this nevertheless hardens you and prepares you for the outside world. About enforcement of discipline, the faculties do get particular about a certain conduct on campus, and some even talk about ‘goodness’ marks that are up to the discretion of the teachers. Also apart from classroom discussions, faculties also initiate many discussion forums, most of which are even informal to get students involved with the latest trends in the legal field and interact with others.

The infrastructure development at the Koba Campus (new campus) began only in 2009, while GNLU started functioning since 2004, after receiving the 50 Acre land from Gujarat Government as donation. GNLU on this front is a masterpiece of exceptional architecture* and most certainly is the most beautifully designed campus probably in the entire country. The buildings are the campus look like 50 acres of modern art. Although all the construction work is still not complete and should be done by the time the 2014 batch comes in, but the elaborate plan doesn’t fail to promise. The buildings are divided into 8 blocks from A to J. Blocks A-H are academic and administrative blocks, I Block is the sports block while J Block is the Students Amenities centre (C Block is the canteen). The front building is called Atalika – which translates to a unique nest of Steel & Concrete. Every aspect of the college has been thoughtfully designed keeping in mind the differently-abled too. The classrooms and the laboratories are nice and clean. Classrooms are equipped with projectors and internet can be accessed over Wi-Fi and LAN networks in the college as well as the hostels. The library is entirely air-conditioned, and houses a lot of volumes, but is yet in formative stages. During normal days, the college issues books till 7PM, while during the exams it’s up to 11 PM. The part of the front building that bears the humongous logo of the institute is the Board Room, which appears to create an illusion of floating in between the 2 blocks. The auditorium is a separate block and that’s where the conferences, seminars or workshops are conducted.

Publications are an integral part of the university and thus the university constantly tries to involve students in bringing out more publications. Various centers are created as a part the same motive, so that students and the faculty can come together based on common interests and conduct seminars, surveys and other related studies and to publish the findings in the respective journals. The findings are sometimes so significant that corporate companies and government machinery also seek help from the centers for their remedies (legal) and consultancy. Mooting is another activity most students involve themselves in, with about a third of the strength actively involved participation at various national level moot completions is high; participation in GNLU’s moot competition is good too. Internships have also been given a lot of importance and every year about 4 months of vacation most utilize in interning with a reputed firm, or an NGO.
Most of the firms are accommodative and approachable as the students of GNLU tell us, but again it’s your own battle. The college and seniors do come to help but your interest need to be defined. With regards to placement after the course; many prefer to do it at the place they interned, but better offers are always there, on-campus and off-campus. Almost all big names in the legal consultancy field in India visit GNLU to recruit students every year. In fact GNLU has been a prime choice for most recruiters over other National Law Universities.

Located off the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar Highway, the road leading to the campus is called PDPU Road (for very obvious reasons). Getting to the college from the Airport or the Railway stations can be a little painful experience as you might end up paying exorbitantly every time you travel. Located across the Institute of Seismological Research (ISR), and Pandit Deendayal Petroleum University (GNLU) on the other side, the campus is located 3 Kms off the main road, and hence is pretty much cut-out from the activities of the city but is easy to locate with the convenient (also huge) sign boards on the highway to guide you. But being a residential course (Living off-campus is not permissible) you would never have to worry about daily travel to get to the college. Owing to its remote location, there isn’t much around the campus, and a tea hut across the college is the only place students go outside campus.

The hostels buildings (Halls of Residence) for girls and boys are separate; the rooms are rather small but have bathrooms attached, and are maintained clean. The housekeeping staff is always around to take care of the cleaning almost perpetually (which means you always have an option to keep it clean), but some like it their way and can be lazy with the cleaning. Indoor and Outdoor Sports facilities are provided and maintained well; which include Football, Tennis, Badminton, Volleyball, Cricket and Carrom. The Gymnasium should be functional soon. Food is served generously and seldom fails to please.

The mess takes care of the food requirements of the 850+ students studying at GNLU. The canteen is a separate block and is big enough to accommodate them all at the same time; also it has a nice little terrace too. The mess charges are to be paid separately per semester and students are satisfied with the food. Things at the mess are organized well, while feeding 850+ four times a day; seven days a week is some impressive feat.

Nothing around the campus but for a chaiwalla hut a few hundred meters away is probably the only place these guys hangout at. The campus is huge and you manage to find your spots to spend leisure time with your friends discussing life, girls, moot courts and exams. A little further away where civilization resumes; 6 Kms from the campus is Infocity (An IT Hub) where you can find all the franchisee stores, subways, macs, and what not! And apart from that, frankly there is nothing much around in the city (Gandhinagar) where you can hangout. People go to malls in and around Ahmedabad at times too. But basically the place is located such that it only discourages you to camp out.A visit to Infocity for the travel.

The crowd here is a representation of the entire nation, where students aspiring to pursue a career in the legal field work hard to take the most competitive exam (aspirants v/s seats available) CLAT. So the tough competition takes care of students with the right aptitude get through. So you get to meet students from different parts of the country, belonging to different cultures yet mix with each other well. Students are mature and responsible that being in GNLU is a something that many just aspire of, and make the most of it, in the direction they want to develop. Everyone is sincere in their own personal spaces. The faculty is always willing to guide students with their inter-disciplinary courses they take in the various years.
The students activities committee takes care of all the activities in GNLU, which has 8 sub-committees like Quizzing Club, Debating, Music, Dance, Drama, Literary, Films and Fine Arts & Photography clubs. Every day of the week one event is lined-up from these committees. Out of 800 students, about 30 interested students turn up for the events which mean involvement and fun. They (events) are all meant for personal development of the student, apart from the legal knowledge they gain from the classroom. In the evenings the lawns are nice for a pleasant stroll. There’s television room available all the time for students.
