Students are absolutely satisfied with the faculties and consider the college’s reputation is to be credited to its studies only. Although they too have their share of ‘disliked’ professors too, who insult students and get their personal egos in between student issues. The principal is strict and his presence can be felt around the students easily. Not a bad person, but a disciplinarian. The Economics faculty is particularly favourite among the students. But a general consensus is that the college is good for those who sincerely wish to study.

Well unlike most colleges of the city, Som-Lalit College of Commerce does NOT have a campus; all it has is two ten-storey buildings. Obviously the buildings are equipped with elevators, and different floors have been allotted to different courses. 8th floor onwards is very windy and pleasant. The classrooms are normal and benches comfortable, while MBA department have air-conditioned classes. Library, students say is just about average, with only syllabus books, and nothing more. Also entry into the library is allowed only post 11:30 AM after all the lectures are over, to ensure students do not bunk and sit in the library. Books from other disciplines are not available which students say could be provided. Wi-Fi has been setup, but its usage is restricted to MBA students on the top floors. Most glass windows are shut all the time, and it does feel suffocating at times and students yearn for open air. The college doesn’t have a planned parking space, and this is most evident during the exams when the number of bikes is maximum. The issue is so bad, that the college has to restrict the students from getting 4 wheelers to college. A rather silly but annoying thing students complain about is the water dripping off the ACs’, partly because they aren’t provided with the facility.

Som-Lalit College of Commerce is located in the heart of the city, in the university area in Navrangpura, right across St. Xavier’s and HLCC colleges on the two sides. The college is easily accessible from all parts of the city, by AMTC and BRTS buses, with both services having bus stops for university students. Nothing much really needs to be said for the brilliant accessibility the college has. About 50-60% students travel by own vehicles and the rest prefer the public transport.

Luckily the canteen has not been a victim of poor planning, and is on the ground floor located best where it can be accessed most easily in the morning by the staff and students alike. From the principal to each and every student they all have their morning tea at the college canteen which is pretty good students say. The food students say is awesome, without any doubt. Although there are no chairs, and most of the times the canteen space is intruded by parked vehicles, so the parked vehicles thus become the tables and chairs for students.

The crowd is good and certainly attracts more toppers being a top college itself. Yet students say that the crowd of the MBA section is even better. Well behaved and friendly who gel with everyone without any issue. Canteen is the place where most sit and chill with friends. The security does its job well to keep the notorious elements away and the area is safe for girls. The ratio of boys to girls is about 1:1, and would be the same for the sincere to non-sincere students.

A festival, just for the sake of conducting one is organized by the college. The 4-day youth festival, which hardly any college student knows about, nor do students attend, is held in the month of December. Those who attended the festival find that conduct there too was generally strict.

Students in the first year need to maintain above 75% attendance, but in the later years things become relatively easier.
Internal marks is a big issue here, with most just ending up 12/30 so that they don’t fail, while the best of the lot also get only 25/30 which puts off the students. Students found using mobiles in classrooms are fined Rs.500 (which is fair), but it only depends on the mood of teacher whether to fine or not. The college is not particularly supportive about any kind of extracurricular activities, or sports events, or cultural events in the college. Most students feel like they are back to a school, and that their college life has been shunned at SLCC. Even if students manage to organize small events, publicity of the same with banners around the canteen is not allowed, yet people find ways to bunk and enjoy. At times what annoys the students the most is when the watchman ‘runs’ the college and behaves like he’s been entrusted with all the operations of the college.

A top college in the city for Commerce studies, while you may have to quietly sacrifice any form of college life your friends at other colleges enjoy. The competition is fierce with respect to academics, but other things go for a toss.
