Although the college has a legacy dating back to mid 50’s, but over time things have changed visibly. Many professors that are newly recruited lack serious teaching experience which is why in spite of being qualified as Masters in Arts, fail to be good teachers. In fact many Xavier-ites itself come and join in after their masters’ degree which students aren’t really pleased with. Yet, some departments on a whole have preserved their reliability; like English, Psychology and literature departments are still good (with certain exceptions there too). The studies overall are good and some senior professors compensate for the other shortcomings. The fathers running the organization are very humble and respectable people, and students find them very approachable about any issue that they face.

Established circa 1954 (and shifted to the current campus is 1956), St. Xavier’s College is among the oldest colleges in the city, and yet the infrastructure of that time has been preserved well, while new developments keep happening. From a humble start with just the main building in 1956 to acquiring land around for the grounds as well as the hostels and other buildings, the campus today is spread over 25 acres, pretty good for a college in the heart of a city. The campus is pretty simple yet beautiful. The quad is what will grab your attention the first with the green lawns and a stage at the end with students chilling around all most all the times of the day. The classes and the labs are good, rather better now, as the college is undertaking renovation work constantly to maintain the infrastructure. The college’s new library runs 24 hours, is huge and incredibly spacious. Books are organized (and a digital system is used to maintain it) well so as retrieving them from the huge collection of books is not a tedious task. Textbooks, reference books, scientific journals, and various subscription magazines in English and Gujarati is what the library offers, apart from the material available at the 4 department libraries. Students can also access the internet at computers in the library. The students are active in sports too, with the college providing enough infrastructure and encouragement too. The teams participate at various tournaments and have won at various inter-college level tournaments, but of course cricket, football and hockey are more popular. The management at St. Xavier’s college is student centric, but of course discipline needs to be maintained. The college has a big parking space for 2 and 4 wheelers.

Well, frankly the concept of on-campus placements here doesn’t happen, but students believe that Xavier’s is a big name and is considered by employers. Many also prefer going abroad to pursue their higher education. Xavier’s has over time produced many artists, poets, actors and writers who were far from the idea of an on-campus job. So while the college does the teaching and nurturing part well, hunting for jobs is one’s individual task. Father’s have also been helping students financially, for higher education with their own money, for the needy.

Located in The heart of the city, St. Xavier’s College is certainly a college which stands out among all other college in the city. Located in University area of Navrangpura, the college is easily accessible from all parts of the city, by AMTC and BRTS buses, with both services having bus stops for university students. Nothing much really needs to be said for the brilliant accessibility the college has, and once in the campus, you’ll feel rather disconnected from the main road too.

Overall the students say that its fun staying at the hostel, but the facilities need to improve. Some of the more issues are that the rules are strict and annoying, mess food is boring and unsavory and there are stupid fines over tiny matters and of course at times no lighting (tubelights). Things are slightly better at the girl’s hostel. 4 people have to share a relatively small room, but students manage anyway. The cost of stay comes..

Well then canteen is certainly not the most discussed part of the college. The canteen serves a good variety of dishes from dosas to Chinese, from cold drinks to ice-creams, almost everything is available. But students are not really fond of things available here, and the more serious foodies camp out of the campus to the university area and places nearby to serve their hunger. Most students find the food expensive; in fact they even manage to make chai and coffee bad, so you can imagine what they would be up to. Not to forget the canteen is pretty small so people have to sit out on benches or in the lawns and it’s good to chill with friends while eating in the lawns. But there are times when people get bored of the campus also after killing hours and hours waiting for a lecture. Navrang 6 Rasta is also a popular foodie location where you find food that fits every taste and pocket.

There are a plethora of options just as you step outside the college campus. From roadside eateries around the university area, to malls and theatres around in Navrangpura, you’re in the heart of the city and nothing seems far from here. Restaurants and cinema halls are just another option. For many even the campus is a good hangout, with groups having their ‘sweet-spots’ around the campus. At times students even drop-by canteens of other colleges (LD College of Engineering, SOM Lalit etc.) around for a change.

While St. Xavier’s is far more vibrant and lively than any other college in Ahmedabad or even Gandhinagar, you’ll find students not only from the city or the state, but also from foreign countries. Every batch has about 20 to 30 foreign students from Afghanistan, Africa and countries from the middle-east. Students get along well, and are amazingly friendly. The interaction between the students is pretty good, with 25 plus events happening year, it’s hard to not be interested in any, and thus working together gets interesting. People are energetic and if not participating they come to cheer the participants. As many as 30% students are non-locals yet getting along with each other is not difficult. The ratio of boys to girls is 60:40 and it goes without saying that they guys are well behaved; also the area is safe for girls.

The cultural festival of St. Xaviers College is called ‘Jasba’ and ‘Tarang’ is the youth fest held in the month of September. People are enthusiastic about both the festivals and turn up in big numbers. Those who are not participating, make sure they attend the festival to cheer for others.

The rules are laid out clearly, and you must follow them to avoid annoyance at the end of the semester. While they are considerate about genuine cases, bunking is absolutely unacceptable. Every student is marked for his/her attendance, and at 75% you get minimum 1 mark, and progressively above 90% fetches you full 5 marks. Below 75% you might be disallowed to take the exams itself. The compensation could be that the college may call your parents to find out the reason for the absence. So basically it’s strict and students maintain it over 75%. There are no restrictions on roaming around in the campus, or as many colleges in Ahmedabad follow ‘a closed gate’ system during the day, but lectures should not be bunked. The problem here is that schedules are made in a weird way, with gaps of over 3-4 hours (at times) between 2 lectures, so people end up spending 12 hours in college just for 3 lectures, and over a long period students get bored of this routine.

Having been to St. Xavier’s College in other cities too; we could clearly experience that the feel was same here. Unlike all other Ahmedabad colleges, this college has a persona of its own which makes time spent here worthwhile. The campus life is good, and so are the studies. Come here for an experience and meeting people of varied interests and motives in life. The hostels are a little disappointment it does not live up-to the reputation of the college otherwise. The alumni are active and you can be sure that the 3 years of your degree here would be eventful. And while you’re out of the college, the reputation and the value of the college count. The lack of senior faculties is a concern, which should improve.
