Courses like BMS & BBI where students actually attend lectures have pretty decent faculty. You can expect a lot visiting faculty turning up for these courses as well. General B.Com. has relatively more laidback teachers but only because students here don’t bother about learning at college.

A hundred year-old building stands tall and wide with unusually big windows giving excellent ventilation to the classrooms and lecture halls. The insides of the building give you a feel of an old convent school with little bits of the walls and ceiling coming off, not surprising then if you witness parts of the ceiling fall during lectures. However, renovations have begun and expectations are high – classrooms are being equipped with air-conditioners, parts of the building are being redone and repainted – the only issue is that progress is TOO slow.

Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics witnesses great placements. Reputed firms like DBS, E&Y, HDFC, KPMG, Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan are said to be regular recruiters. Average packages offered are a decent Rs. 3L a year and nearly 100% placements have been observed.

Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics is located bang opposite the last station on the Western Railways – Churchgate and not very far from other renowned colleges of this area namely GLC, Jai Hind, HR and KC. Accessibility shouldn’t be an issue unless you stay really far from the college and are NOT a frequent suburban train traveller.

Hostel is common amongst three colleges and the one for girls is right behind the college. Another hostel for guys is at Charni Road.

This is one thing about the college which students have extreme opinions about. Some love the food and are found to be munching on their favourite items here, while others complain of tasteless food and prefer eating outside at the food stalls or a restaurant (read Satkar). However, what everyone finds interesting is the amazing variety which is on offer here; apart from the standard offerings they have egg Schezwan Rice and Magajmaari Dosa which are really popular amongst those who love the canteen.

South Mumbai has countless places which can act as great hangout joints. Movie theatre "Eros" - one of the few light on pocket yet decent with the crowd theatres - is a stone's throw away. Regal, Inox, Sterling, New Excelsior aren't too far either. To catch a fresh breeze of air and have nice little walk there's Marine Drive which obviously is the most popular past time amongst students at HR College. Numerous restaurants and snack joints include Samrat, 210 degrees, Relish, Pizzeria, Gaylord, Mocha, Shiv Sagar, Satkar and many more names crop up if do not mind a tiny vehicle ride. Another popular and cheap hangout is the Sandwich and Rolls stall bang opposite the gate which serves a must-try "Chilli Cheese Toast".

Leaving out a small minority of the highly sophisticated crowd, you won’t get a good feeling talking to the others or rather you won’t FEEL like approaching them. It is bad and it’s worsening – nowhere close to what you would expect of a South Bombay college.

Various societies at Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics keep arranging for numerous festivals and events. Amongst all the events, the most popular turn out to be Brouhaha an intercollege cultural event, Harsh Ulhas organized by the MWM and Muranjan, a theatre festival organized by the dramatics society. The BMS department organizes a sort of career fair with small management related events and games, whereas the BBI department celebrates its own festival “Concord”. All or most of these festivals are in December thus making it one of the most awaited month for the Sydenhamites.

Again where studies at college matter, it is strict and 75% attendance is recommended with nothing less than 60% being tolerated. Black lists are put up and parents are called for if the students aren’t able to make up for short of attendance. No one bothers about attendance in B.Com. Though.

Apart from whatever positives are found in the above factors, a more important reason why students join this college is its legacy, the alumni and the 100 year reputation. Once you’re in the college, you feel you are a part of something bigger than just the college. If you’re unlikely to get these kind of feelings for the college, its better you don’t join…what say Sydenham-ites?
