Lost Lustre

Gone are the times when a decent 60-70% meant a top seat in a college. Gone are the times when competition was restricted to a handful of braniacs who eventually got the best colleges in the end. So, technically, NO competition as such. How amazing it sounded when, I guess, my grandpa told me that a 10th standard qualification was a herculean achievement and that very few had this milestone in their kitty. Graduation was something which distinguished you from your peers. Even a basic degree meant a killer secure job and people exclaiming that you are something phenomenal.

It’s like waking up in a bad time now. 10th grade degree is mere perfunctory with absolutely no respect left for them. Now even a graduation degree is hmmm, Okay! A Postgraduate degree earns you some sort of “social status”. I fail to understand this protocol. What has a degree got to do with your social status? Nevermind.

Human Greed is insatiable. Now this unfortunate sin has even been extended to the so called ‘Education System’. Beta, sirf Engineering se kuch nahi hoga. MBA karo. MBBS toh sabhi karte hai. MD karo! Parents, especially, at their best. You mean to tell me 4-5 years of unimaginable mindf*ck is just a step towards another 2-3 years of “Education”? *sigh* This is how it has become. The mindset of the people - degree is proportional to how ‘not wasted’ you are. The more you are formally educated, the better you're a person.

Sadly, whatever we pursue today seems less in the blood-thirsty competitive world. The ‘LUSTRE’ has truly been lost. 10th standard has practically become worthless. Higher Secondary Certificate exam is on the verge of being just a divergence point for students to select paths of Engineering, Medicine, BMM, BMS, BSc and they again converge for Post Graduation Degrees.. again diverge. It’s a crazy branching. Degrees are just a materialistic piece of paper good enough for earning a decent salary, finding a suitable “soulmate”. Well, even the “soulmate” checks your bank balance and, boy... higher the education, higher SHOULD BE the bank balance, apparently as the system is.

Anyways, I'm off to clean up the trash in the house which mainly comprises semester V books. Yaaay! The area needs to be cleared for semester 6 now. Adios for now and I hope a basic degree is atleast respected and not looked down with scorn.
